The Gotta Have Rock and Roll Pop Culture Auction April 2021

Perhaps one of the most iconic Prince outfits to ever come up for sale. Prince wore this custom purple long metallic jacket in his "Little Red Corvette" and "1999" music videos. These are two of Prince's most iconic music videos. Prince also wore the jacket.shirt and pants heavily during the "Purple Rain" tour. The jacket is paired with his stage worn custom white shirt from the famous 1984/1985 "Purple Rain" tour and purple pants which were also worn on the tour. The shirt is lavishly crafted from soft silk/cotton and featuring a gathered high-neck collar, three layers of ruffles down the front, gathered 'puffy' long sleeves, ruffled faux French cuffs, faux pearl buttons down the front placket, and light shoulder pads. Sewn inside the neck is a purple-on-white "Prince" label. The shirt was obtained from the Helen Hiatt Prince Collection. Helen Hiatt was Prince's primary Costume designer from 1985–1991, directing the design and management of wardrobe for personnel, music videos, and photo shoots, and dressed Prince for all of his tours during that period. She got her start while working in the wardrobe department for 1984’s Purple Rain, advancing into a higher role when Prince decided to set up a proper costume shop in 1985. The jacket and shirt are in very good, stage worn condition. The pants show more wear, probably due to the how active Prince was on stage in his performances. The pants have some light staining, and a few small tears including a 2.5" tear on the rear that can be seen in the photo of the back of the pants. The very bottoms of the pant legs show most of the wear, with actual tears and rips at the back- most likely due to the fact that they would have gone over Prince's heels and endured most of the stage wear of the outfit - you can view this also in the photo of the back of the pants. For more information on condition please contact us at or at 212-750-7900. The purple coat was originally sold at Bonhams London over 20 years ago. The ultimate piece of Prince memorabilia! Comes with a letter of provenance and a Gotta Have Rock and Roll Certificate of Authenticity.
