During the summer of 1970, on the heels of 1969's Woodstock, regional promoters tried their hand at mounting their own festivals. They, of course, hoped to attract multitudes of paying customers, rather than the hundreds of thousands of gate-crashers that descended upon Max Yasgur's farm in Bethel, New York, in August '69. Four of the nine posters represented here advertise such events held in 1970; the remaining six posters spanning 1971 to 1978. Presented in chronological order as follows: 1) Portland Music & Art Fair at Civic Stadium, 6/13-14/70 - Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, Country Joe, Big Brother & The Holding Company (without Joplin, who was touring with her Full Tilt Boogie Band) & others; 2) People's Fair in Madison, WI., 6/26-28/70 - Chuck Berry, Johnny Winter, Steve Miller Band, Mason Proffitt; & others; 3)Turner Falls International Pop Festival near Dallas, 8/8-9/70 - The Byrds, Flying Buritto Brothers & others; 4) Waterstock in 9/19/70 - Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, The Cowsills and others; 5)1st Indianapolis Rock Festival, 8/14/71 - Sea Train, Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, Cactus, Buddy Miles, Savoy Brown, Glass Harp; 6)1st Annual July Jam in Wildwood, NJ, 7/73 - Electric Light Orchestra (first U.S. tour) & others; 7) Diamond Head Festival 12/31/75-1/1/76 - America, BTO, Seals & Crofts, Sly Stone, Billy Preston, Country Joe & others; 8) Mountain Air Festival at Calaveras County Fairgrounds 1977 - Doobie Brothers, Little River Band & others; 9) Bread & Roses Festival at UC Berkeley, 9/2-4/78 - Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock, Odetta, Mimi Farina, Elizabeth Cotton, Mickey Newberry, David Bromberg & others. The posters measure 11" x 17" to 18" x 30". Overall EX. to NM. Estimate $1,000-$1,500.
