Babe Ruth’s affinity for children especially orphans and those less privileged is in full display in this wonderful 7.5 X 9 original photograph stamp dated on verso Sep 13 1934 with an attached caption that describes, “Hundreds of orphans and underprivileged children who visited the World’s Fair today ..,were made happier when they met their biggest hero, the famous Babe Ruth…” Much of Ruth’s own childhood was spent under similar circumstances at the St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys, a reformatory and orphanage in Baltimore where he honed his legendary baseball skills under the auspices of his mentor and baseball coach Brother Matthias Boutlier.
