The Kennedy family, sometimes referred to as “America’s Royal Family,” are captured in this historic 7.5 X 5 original black and white photograph that was taken in 1934 and utilized by the press to report the naming of Joseph Patrick Kennedy, Sr. to the post becoming the very first Chairman to the newly formed Securities and Stock Exchange Commission by President Franklin Roosevelt. All of the children with the exception of Kennedy’s first born son Joseph, Jr. (noted on the verso to be in Europe at the time) are pictured by age to the left of Joseph Patrick Kennedy, Sr. and his wife Rose Elizabeth Fitzgerald. A newsprint caption attached to the verso titled “These Are the Kennedys,” begins “…they make a picture worth printing,” and identifies the children (L to R) Edward, Jeanne, Robert, Patricia, Eunice, Kathleen, Rosemary, and John who of course became the 35th President of the United States, fulfilling the dream of his father of having a son in the White House. The political involvement of the Kennedy family was deep and long lasting with there being a span of 64 years (but for a short gap before JFK’s inauguration) with a Kennedy in elective office in Washington. The photograph has additionally been stamped on the verso with the date and “International News Photo” credit and labeled for filing. A PSA/DNA label affixed to the verso acknowledges this rare photograph as a “Type 1” original with a matching record attesting to this fact maintained by this major certification service. This vintage original photograph of this iconic family is indeed a rare artifact and one deserving the status of being considered an American treasure.
