Vintage Admiral Dewey & USS Maine Spanish-American War Mirror Hat Rack
Remembrance of the Spanish-American War is depicted on this rare antique mirror and hat rack commemorating the American war heroes in the Spanish American War and the American battleship the U.S.S. Maine. The well detailed artifact dates to shortly after the 1898 War. The finely crafted hat rack / mirror measures 18 inches square but hangs in the position of a diamond shape with hooks to hang a hat or coat at each of three corners. An articulated stamped brass plated tin design commemorating the War surrounds an 8-inch square beveled mirror. Design elements include Admiral Dewey on the left side, Rear Admiral Schley on the right side, a tribute to “Our Boys,” on top and the depiction of the U.S.S. Maine on the bottom. The sinking of the Maine and death of more than 250 American sailors in Havana harbor, Cuba on February, 1898 under controversial circumstances was the catalyst for the war which was declared by both sides in April. The ten-week war was fought in both the Caribbean and the Pacific, with the main issue of Cuban independence from Spain decided as a result of the American victory. George Dewey, Admiral of the US Navy and Rear Admiral, Winfield Scott Schley were considered the heroes of the War. Dewey is best known for his victory in the battle of Manila Bay, Philippines. Schley is favored for his victory over the Spanish fleet under Admiral Pascual Cervera y Topete in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba. For America it was a politically charged War during which the public’s fervor was stoked by American journalist titans William Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer. This great artifact captures the essence of history and patriotism in America as the country prepared to turn into the twentieth century.
