The Jam's co-founding member Bruce Foxton has handwritten and signed the lyrics to their single "Smithers-Jones" in black ink on two sheets of white stationery. “Smithers-Jones” was originally released as the B-side to The Jam’s 1979 single “When You’re Young.” It is notable for its departure from their usual punk and mod-inspired sound, embracing a more baroque pop sound with the inclusion of a string section.Written by The Jam’s bassist and backing vocalist, Bruce Foxton, he drew inspiration from his father’s experience of being made redundant.
