The Beatles "Yesterday and Today" 1966 Capitol LP Promo Poster Plus Mono & Stereo Butcher Covers.
Original 1966 US Capitol records 18" x 22" promo "Butcher Cover" poster. This is the withdrawn version featuring the "Butcher Cover" photo and "INCREDIBLE!" in large bright red print at the top. These posters were distributed to record stores and radio stations, but were recalled, just as First State Butcher Cover records were. The cover photo by Robert Whitaker, though an attempt at pop-art satire, was deemed offensive by the general public and was replaced with a much more conventional image.
There are multiple counterfeit reprints of this poster that exist, which are mostly obvious inferior quality reproductions. However, there is a very convincing fake dating from the 1970s. The genuine poster has a Capitol logo at the bottom which is printed in dark black ink. On the repro version, the logo looks brownish. Also, due to a printing error, there is a small red lightning-like line running through the "Dr. Robert" song title which is above the album title, but only on the counterfeits.
Original printings lack this flaw.
Also included in this lot are nice condition examples of mono and stereo Butcher Covers, with accompanying records and inner sleeves. When the so-called "first state" Butcher covers were recalled, rather than destroy the "offensive" covers, Capitol thought it more economical to simply paste the new (non-offensive) front cover slick over the original one. These "pasteover" covers are known as "second state" Butchers.
Consequently, many fans peeled off the new version of the cover slick to reveal the original Butcher Cover design. These peeled covers are known as "third state" Butchers.
Offered here as one lot are two third state Butchers as well as an authentic poster promoting the Yesterday And Today" release. As a bonus, each Butcher includes copies (not originals) of Capitol's recall letters to reviewers, fan club presidents and consumers.
