Stanley Mouse “Skip Spence" Original Artwork For “More Oar: A Tribute to the Skip Spence Album" (1999).

This significant piece of original art by renowned psychedelic artist Stanley Mouse (better known as Mouse) is an original color pencil portrait of Skip Spence.

Spence was a co-founder of Moby Grape as a young musician who in 1969 released his only solo album “Oar." Described as one of psychedelia brightest lights, Spence's life and music career was plagued with drug addiction and mental health problems.

Mouse contributed the portrait to a 1999 tribute album, “More Oar: A Tribute to the Skip Spence Album" released shortly before Spence passed away at the age of 52. The album featured contributions from Robert Plant, Tom Waits, Beck and others.

The framed artwork is signed and inscribed on the verso of the frame by record producer Bill Bentley who is notable for having produced this tribute album to Spence as well as other tribute albums to significant cult artists. Bentley writes, “Stanley Mouse did this artwork for the Skip Spence tribute album in 1999 titled More Oar."

Mouse of course is best known for his rock concert poster and album cover designs, particularly for the Grateful Dead. Mouse has signed his drawing in the lower right.

Art displays 12 X 18, framed 19 X 25.

Excellent condition.
