Sinead O'Connor “Nothing Compares 2 U” 1990 Best Video of the Year MTV Award Presented to Sinead O’Connor.
Offered here is Sinead O’Connor’s original MTV Music Award.
"Nothing Compares 2 U" is a song written and composed by Prince for his side project the Family; the song appeared on their 1985 debut album, The Family. The song features lyrics exploring feelings of longing from the point of view of an abandoned lover.
Several years later, Irish singer-songwriter Sinéad O'Connor recorded a version of the song for her second studio album, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got (1990). It was released as the album's second single in early 1990 and became a worldwide hit. The music video, directed by John Maybury, received heavy rotation on MTV. In December 1990, Billboard named "Nothing Compares 2 U" as the "#1 World Single" of 1990 at its first Billboard Music Awards.
The 1990 MTV Video Music Awards aired live on September 6, 1990. O'Connor won 3 VMA awards this night including Best Video of the Year. She had beat out Aerosmith, Madonna and Don Henley for this award.
Up for auction here is the actual MTV VMA Award that she won and was presented at the 1990 awards show. If you look closely at the photos of her holding the 3 award trophies from that night you will see that the presentation plates are blank as that is how MTV did the awards as all of the trophies are blank when they are presented on stage and later on it’s engraved with the name and other info. The trophy has been in the possession of our consignor for almost 20 years. He personally obtained this award from a person who lived in London and who shipped it directly to me. He also got a signed letter from him explaining how he came to have this award. He disclosed in the letter that for whatever unknown reasons after being presented these MTV Video Music Awards in 1990 Sinead O'Connor gave the awards away which some believed that it was due to the ongoing conflict between IRA and England. In 1992 this person won Sinead O’Connor’s’ 1990 MTV “Best Video of the Year” VMA Award as well as her 1990 MTV “Best Female Video of the Year” VMA Award. He purchased them in a public auction in London. For 13 years after the auction he owned both of these MTV Awards until he decided it was time to sell them on Ebay in Oct of 2005.
This MTV VMA award is unique as the award was made by the RS Owens Company of Chicago. This is the same company that used to make the Academy Awards and the company who used to make the Emmy Award Trophy along with other high profile award and trophies.
These three VMA Awards she would win in 1990 would be the ONLY MTV VMA awards she would ever win in her long career.
This trophy is very heavy and just like the Academy Awards trophy a lot heavier than it looks. This MTV award is made of a very heavy metal material that’s attached to a black base and has a silver plate attached to it. It weighs in at 6 pounds and 2.9 oz. The silver plating does show a bit or wear but for being over 30 years old it’s not bad.
An incredibly unique item.
