President Abraham Lincoln Civil War Handwritten & Signed Appointment Letter to Secretary of War.
An incredible piece of Abraham Lincoln and Civil War memorabilia - this is an actually letter from President Abraham Lincoln to the Secretary of War, all in Lincoln's hand, the date, the letter, his signature, written during the Civil War. Handwritten and signed by Lincoln in black dip pen on "Executive Mansion, Washington" letterhead, and dated January 25, 1863, Lincoln is writing to the Secretary of War (Edwin Stanton) requesting the appointment of Joseph P. Longhead a Commisary of Subsistence (sp). The Commissary Department’s main task was to purchase, pack, and distribute rations of food and supplies to the U.S. Army.
This is a truly gorgeous specimen of Lincoln's penmanship and his signature and it gives the reader a deeper insight to how Lincoln was involved in every aspect of the war - literally living and breathing it - and personally seeing to virtually every aspect of the campaign to beat the Confederates. It should be noted that his Secretary of War Edwin Stanton was also thought to micro-manage, and on the ill-fated evening of Lincoln's assassination it was Stanton who whirled into action - even though Andrew Johnson would be sworn in as President at 11am on April 15, it was Stanton who truly took control of the government in the moment as Andrew Johnson had barely been sworn in and was unsure of himself, and Congress was not in session.
