Pierce, the 14th President of the United States (1853-1857) was a northern Democrat who believed that the abolitionist movement to end slavery was a threat to the nation’s unity. Pierce stoked national tensions over slavery by signing the Kansas-Nebraska Act and enforcing the Fugitive Slave Act.
