Led Zeppelin John Bonham Owned & Played Green Sparkle Ludwig Drum Kit Circa 1970-1971.
Offered here is one of the most iconic and recognizable drum kits in the world, one of John Bonham’s iconic Green Sparkle Ludwig kits.
The kit features four original pieces from the kit, including the 26 x 14 in bass drum serial #818637, a 14 x 10 in tom drum serial #818663, a 16 x 16 in floor tom drum serial #818654 and a 18 x 16 floor tom drum serial #1506225. The finish on the 18 x16 in floor tom drum had been burned when the previous owner received it from Bonham. They had it professionally refinished in about 1996. The original badge had to be removed in order to remove the original finish, which is why the serial number is out of sync with the three other drums.
This was Bonham's second kit from Ludwig in about May 1970, just before the start of the Iceland Tour. John was sent three kits (what we know) in this configuration from Ludwig: the first is owned by his widow, Pat Bonham - which was on loan to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and now sits at their home, The Old Hyde, with John's picture over it, the second by Jeff Ocletree and the third by a private collector in upstate New York. This kit was used from June 22, 1970 through April 2, 1973 through the end of the 1973 European Tour.
It is uncertain where this kit was played, but it was Bonham’s. Per the previous owner of this kit, “I met John Bonham through our mutual friend, Jim Capaldi the drummer with Traffic in about 1975-76. I accompanied Capaldi to Bonham’s residence to help deliver a Gretsch drum set Capaldi was giving to Bonham. On that trip, Bonham offered Capaldi this Ludwig Green Sparkle drum set in return. Capaldi declined the offer because the sizes of the drums were too large for him to use. Bonham then offered me the set and I accepted.”
The kit also features two snare drums which were not Bonhams.
