‘Windsor’ style eyeglasses, owned and worn by John Lennon. Accompanied by the original case and lens cleaning cloth, as issued by his optometrist. Completing the lot, is a typed letter to the original owner, which has been hand signed by John Lennon.
The letter, dated from August 1967, is headed with the address of Kenwood (Lennon’s residence between July 1964 – December 1968), the property that he shared with his then-wife Cynthia, in Weybridge, Surrey. The letter reads, “Dear Pauline, as requested a pair of my old specs. With love from me to you. John Lennon”. Lennon began to wear Windsor-style spectacles in 1966. The letter provides an idea of when Lennon would have likely worn the spectacles, a period that straddled the releases of 'Revolver' and 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'. It is also impossible to ignore the fact that that letter contains lyrics from the 1964 Beatles song ‘From Me To You’, the band’s first UK No.1 hit record.
Importantly, the optometrist, whose details are printed on the case and cleaning cloth, was located in the same village as Kenwood - Weybridge, Surrey.
John Lennon spectacles that are complete with lenses are very rarely offered for sale. Furthermore, this is the only time that a pair of John Lennon glasses have been offered at auction with documented provenance by John Lennon himself; forming the most complete set of John Lennon spectacles, ever to be publicly offered. Lennon can be seen wearing similar glasses throughout his time with The Beatles, as seen in the attached pictures within this lot description. This is, without question, a museum-quality lot. Good condition. The lot is accompanied by a full Roger Epperson (REAL) Letter of Authenticity, a James Spence Authentication (JSA) Letter of Authenticity, and a Gotta Have Rock & Roll Certificate of Authenticity.
