Katsumori Yamashiro, Captain of the Japanese destroyer ‘Amagiri’ that famously sank Lieutenant John F. J Kennedy’s PT109 has painstakingly drawn his detailed map on this JFK Memoriam FDC envelope that he has also signed, illustrating the site of the sinking of PT109 on the night of August 2, 1943. The mapped out envelope is accompanied by his handwritten signed letter dated August 23, 1978 in correspondence with an individual whom he made frequent exchanges with in the United States. A mailing envelope postmarked from Japan hand addressed by Yamashiro is also included. Yamashiro had always maintained that as Commander of the Amagiri, he tried to avoid collision with PT109 and that it was sunk by accident and not intentionally.
Envelopes measure 6.5 X 3.75 - 8.25 X 3.75. Letter 7 X 10. Very good condition.
