James Dean Signed "Black & Gold" 1949 High School Senior Year Yearbook.
Actor James Dean has signed his 1949 Fairmont High School Yearbook (Fairmont, Indiana) on his senior picture in back ballpoint pen. Dean was quite active in high school. Under his photo, he is listed as being on the Basketball and Track teams, in the Play club, the Thespians club, the F Club and in Band. The quote below this list reads: "Jim is our regular basketball guy, and when you're around him - time will fly." In addition to this senior club picture, Dean is pictured as Member of Senior Play Cast, with his name listed, and then again on the next as "Frankenstein" in one of the school plays for that year. His performance is described: "...as Frankenstein grogesquely 'scared the wits' out of the audience." The actor, a high school star athelete is also pictured on the Sports Review page, you can see him in the photo on the right side, having just thrown the ball, wearing his #3 baskeball jersey. Dean is featured again on the Quaker Baseball Team photo, and is described as "James Dean, brilliant senior guard, was one of the main cogs in the Quaker line-up this season. Jim was rated as one of the most outstanding guards in the county." Finally, he is once again pictured, this time on the Fairmont High Track Team page, and listed as outstanding in the Pole Vault.
James Dean, is considered one of the most talented actors of his generation and his early tragic death catapulted him into the status of an icon. He had several uncredited roles from 1951 to 1953 before starring as a rebellious son attempting to win his father's approval in "East of Eden" (1955). In "Rebel Without a Cause" (1955), he portrayed a teenager struggling to make sense of his emotions, who feels frustrated with his family and social life. His last lead role was playing a Texas rancher who discovered oil and became rich, in "Giant" (1956). These three films are among the greatest ever made in their own right, and they were the movies that brought Dean to the attention of the world. Dean died in a car crash in 1955. He became the only actor to receive two posthumous Academy Award acting nominations, being nominated in the Best Actor category for "East of Eden" and "Giant." In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked him the 18th best male movie star of Golden Age Hollywood in the AFI's 100 Years...100 Stars list. Dean's film roles, fashion, and manners became celebrated in popular culture and influenced the development of rock and roll in the 1950s and 1960s.
