James Brown gifted the jacket to his famed booking and promotional manager Irwin Pate, James Brown gifted the shoes to Irwin Pate, his exclusive booking and promotional manager for fourteen years, from the late 1960's until the early 1980's. In addition to handling his bookings and promotions, Irwin was also a close personal friend of James Brown, and Brown gave him some of his personal clothing and belongings over the years. Irwin Pate, and his wife, Clarine, worked with many popular acts for decades and amassed quite a collection of celebrity stage worn and personally worn clothing, jewelry and accessories.
