George William Curtis Signed Letters (2)(Civil War Editor Harper's Weekly) & Charles Sumner Signature Cut.

A pair of letters from abolitionist and woman’s suffrage advocate George William Curtiss. Curtiss was a well-traveled writer, public speaker and associate of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Davis Thoreau who during the Civil War was an editor of Harper’s weekly and who helped in the cause of the Underground Railroad. One letter is a handwritten signed letter dated 1857 written on two-sides of 5 X 8 stationery. The second letter dated 1890 is typed on his 4.5 X 7 stationery and accompanied by its original mailing envelope. This lot also includes the signature cut of Charles Sumner, who served in the Massachusetts State Senate and the US Senate. Like Curtiss, Sumner was a strong abolitionist.

Dimensions: Stationery 4.5 in x 7 in, the signature cut 4 in X 1.875 in.
