George Amick’s 1958 Indy 500 Second-Place Trophy.

The 42nd running of the International 500-Mile Sweepstakes (a.k.a. “The Indy 500”) was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 30, 1958. In a hard-fought battle with 33 drivers at the start, Jimmy Bryan outlasted runner-up George Amick by 27 seconds to win the race. The event was part of the 1958 USAC National Championship Trail, and was also race 4 of 11 in the 1958 World Championship of Drivers. Featured here is the oversized “Coyne Electrical School Trophy,” manufactured by EGW&S Silver, that Amick took home that day for finishing in second place. The Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, which primarily trained electricians, was an event sponsor. Amick was also named the 1958 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year. Almost a year later, on April 4, 1959, Amick was competing in the only Indy Car race ever run at the Daytona International Speedway and was killed in an accident on the final lap. He was 34 years old.
