This is Elvis Presley’s movie and personally used Gibson acoustic guitar that he frequently played at Graceland with his close friend Charlie Hodge in impromptu jam sessions. This is Elvis Presley’s movie and personally used Gibson acoustic guitar that he frequently played at Graceland with his close friend Charlie Hodge in impromptu jam sessions. Elvis played this beautiful guitar in his 1963 MGM film, “It Happened at the World’s Fair.” The guitar was featured prominently in the film during the two production numbers, “The Sandman’s Coming” and the popular “One Broken Heart For Sale.” An interesting note is that for this film, as in Paramount’s “G.I. Blues” where Elvis plays his own Gibson J-200, the Gibson logo is blacked out. Why the movie studios, or the Gibson guitar company, did this remains uncertain. The sunburst design Gibson guitar has a blue twine-type strap that was mostly likely put on by the studio and Elvis kept it on. Elvis eventually gifted the guitar to Hodge and a letter of provenance from Hodge accompanies the guitar. The guitar also comes with color photographs of Elvis playing the guitar in a number of scenes from the movie. This is one of Elvis’ most beautiful guitars used in a film. Movie-used guitars of this caliber seldom come up for auction.
