Dorothea Dix handwritten signed letter (dated 1864 in 3rd party hand). Credited with many positive medical changes during her lifetime, Dix transformed nursing through her recruitment of nurses for the Union as the Superintendent of Army Nurses during the Civil War and her championship of causes on behalf of the mentally ill and indigenous populations.
