An autograph collection of historic and contemporary authors, journalists, playwrights and poets consisting of signed letters, photographs and other ephemera. Among the letters are Miriam Leslie (1887 ALS) wife of famed illustrator and publisher Frank Leslie (Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper / Leslie’s Weekly) who adopted her husbands name upon his death in 1880; Louis Untermeyer (1922), Vachel Lindsay (considered father of modern singing poetry), Arthur Brisbane (1912) well known editor New York Journal Publishing Company, journalist Marquis Childs (1948), playwright Moss Hart (1959), Pulitzer prize winning author Herman Wouk (1962) making reference to his work “Youngblood Hawke,” novelist John Cheever (1979), William Styron (1981) author of “Sophies Choice”, Alex Haley (1980) author of “Roots: The Saga of an American Family,” and best-selling author Dean Koontz. Signed photographs include: Pulitzer prize winning author Norman Mailer (accompanied by a signed FDC envelope and 3c postage stamp block); commentators, journalists and correspondents including John Vandercook, Joseph C. Harsch, Henry LaCossitt, Edward R. Murrow, and Drew Pearson; authors Kenneth Roberts (wrote “Northwest Passage”), Dean Koontz, Alex Haley (“Roots”) and Norman Vincent Peale (Clergyman -Positive Thinking Fame). Other ephemera includes a script page “The Passion of Josef D” (1964 play about Josef Stalin) signed by Academy Award winning playwright and screen writer Paddy Chayefsky, a Miller Light beer ad card signed by Mickey Spillane, a card and a postage stamp by “The Exorcist” author William Peter Blatty, a card and a FDC signed by author Peter Benchley (“Jaws”), George Ade (d. 1944) signed card (writer, newspaper columnist and playwright), a signed photograph and handwritten note card from famed celebrity attorney and author Melvin Belli (defended Muhammad Ali and Jack Ruby among many other famous people) and inscribed signature cut from Riober G. Ingersoll - writer and orator nicknamed “the Great Agnostic”. Other names signed on cards, envelopes and ephemera include lyricist Fred Ebb (3 items), lyricist Gerry Goffin (2 items), and author Alison Luri (3 items). Few items are personalized. Very few included cards have unidentified signatures. NOTE: this collection comes from a single source collection, but we cannot guarantee the authenticity of every signature.
