Colin Powell is an American four-star general and statesman who served as the 65th United States Secretary of State from 2001 to 2005. As a general, he served as National Security Advisor (1987–1989) and as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989–1993). He was the first African American appointed to the position. After retirement from the military, Powell won bipartisan support for his appointment as Secretary of State, and he was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate. He is a recipient of numerous U.S. and foreign military awards and decorations, including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal.
