Bob Cain, the Detroit Tigers pitcher who played a part in major league baseball history when on August 19, 1951 he pitched to Eddie Gaedel, a three-foot seven-inch midget who was sent in as a pinch-hitter for the St. Louis Browns, has signed and transcribed this Official American League baseball relaying the story of this historic event. Signing his name to a side panel, Cain inscribes the remaining panels with his story including the date played, naming both teams and naming the ballpark – Sportsman’s Park. Stretching across two side panels and sweet spot is Cain’s most bountiful writing, “I was the pitcher for the Detroit Tigers who pitched to the St. Louis Brown’s 3’7” midget, Eddie Gaedel, who wore uniform number 1/8 and I walked him on four straight pitches, pinch-hit for Frank Saucier, Pinch-runner Jin Delsing.” In his single plate appearance Eddie Gaedel became the shortest player and only midget to appear in major league baseball history. The ball exhibits some light toning with the writing remaining bold and vibrant.

Very good condition.
