This Apollo-Soyuz Test Project Beta Cloth Mission Beta cloth mission patch was personally owned by Astronaut and NASA Chief of the Astronaut Office and Director Donald K. "Deke" Slayton and was held by his family since his death in 1993. Slayton was selected as one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts in 1959 and was slated to fy the second orbital mission when he was grounded with an irregular heartbeat. He stayed on with NASA and became Chief of the Astronaut Office and later director of Flight Crew Operations. He was restored to flight status in 1972 and finally made it into space on July 15, 1975 as part of the Apollo-Soyuz Test projects. He then became Manager of the Space Shuttle Approach and Landing Tests and then Manager of Orbital Flight Test. Measures approximately 5.5 x 5.5. Very good condition. Comes with a certificate from Sandy Clarkson of The Right Stuff, Inc. and a Gotta Have Rock & Roll Certificate of Authenticity.
