Abraham Lincoln Recalls Democrat Envoy to Prussia Days Before Start of Civil War Leading to Strengthening of Relations and Prussia Delivering Weapons to Union - Handwritten and Signed Document.

Lincoln Recalls Democrat Envoy to Prussia Days Before Start of Civil War Leading to Strengthening of Relations and Prussia Delivering Weapons to Union. Fantastic DS with Bold Signature.

DS, boldly signed by President Lincoln with his full name signature as "Abraham Lincoln" authorizing the "Secretary of State to affix the seal of the United States to the envelope of a letter addressed to his majesty the King of Prussia. (Mr. Wright's Recall)". 8.5" x 10", Washington D.C., March 25, 1861. Slight toning, expert repair, expected folds from mailing, and evidence of previous mounting on verso, else fine.

As tensions began to rise between the North and the South in March of 1861, President Lincoln looked to strengthen relations with Prussia who, alongside Russia, was America’s most reliable ally in Europe. On April 12, 1861, just two and a half weeks before Confederate shore batteries under General P.G.T. Beauregard opened fire on Union-held Fort Sumter in South Carolina’s Charleston Harbor that Lincoln would recall the Democrat Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Prussia, Joseph A. Wright. Mr. Wright had just written to Secretary of State Seward “the government and the people [of Prussia] are, in spirit and sentiment, on our side.” The moment the Confederacy announced secession, Prussia made it clear that it backed the Union, and dealt with the Civil War as an “internal affair” of the Union.

In the early phase of the Civil War, Prussia and the Customs Union delivered weapons to the Union. Still more significant, most U.S. government bonds were negotiated on the German Exchanges, while the sole attempt to place a Confederate bond at the Frankfurt bourse failed. At this time, the Prussian government would even allow German officers to enroll in the Union Army. The relationship between Prussia and the United States was key should the need arise, to conduct a war against England and France.

Abraham Lincoln was an American lawyer and statesman who served as the 16th president of the United States from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. Lincoln is known primarily for his leadership during the American Civil War (1861 – 1865) and for signing the Emancipation Proclamation, an executive order changing the legal status of slaves to 'free'.

Good condition.
