1848 Gouverneur Morris Jr. Signed Indenture Deed (Morrisania)

1848 Indenture deed executed between Gouverneur Morris Jr. and to named individuals and trustees in the agreement. Morris was the son of United States founding father Gouverneur Morris. Morris was a major entrepreneur of the 19th Century Bronx, New York and at the time of this agreement was promoting Port Morris (southwest neighborhood of the Bronx) and donated land to skilled workers creating a workingman’s village he called Morrisania. The 10.25 X 16 two-sided agreement opens to 20.5 X 16 where it is signed by represented parties including Gouverneur Morris of Morrisania. Morris was also one of the founders of the Republican Party, attending its opening convention in 1854.
