Exceptionally rare and historical 1825 executed performance contract for the performance of the named individual to become part of the orchestra at the historical Covent Garden Theatre (London). Dated July 29, 1825 the contract is executed between Charles Lamont? (performer) and Charles Kemble. Kemble was himself an actor and member of a prominent theatre family who in the later part of his career was beset with financial troubles in connection with his joint proprietorship of Covent Garden.
From the 1660s until the mid-19th Century, the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden was one of two theatres allowed to perform spoken drama. The first theatre built on the site of the ancient Covent Garden was opened in 1732 with the first ballet performed in 1734. Handel presented his first season of opera there in 1735. This original structure burned down in 1808 taking with it Handel’s organ. The second theatre there, designed by Robert Smirke opened in 1809. Smirke’s building would also burn to the ground in 1857 and in the 1990s went through considerable reconstruction with it noe known as the Royal Opera House (home to the Royal Opera and Royal Ballet).
The contract opens to 19 X 15. Signed three times by performer Charles as it was extended for the 1826-27 and 1827-28 seasons. Also signed by actor and Theatre owner Charles Kemble.
