This is the original certificate from the Government of the Virgin Islands of the United States naming James Brown as the Honorary Ambassador to the U.S. Virgin Islands, dated July 8, 1968. The document bears the official government seal of the Virgin Islands on the lower right corner. With some spotting and water damage (along the bottom), the document shows wear from age and bears a very small quarter inch tears on two sides. The Honorary Ambassadorship may have been the result of Brown's renowned social activism beginning in the late 1960's and into the 1970's, culminating in his ground-breaking song "Say it Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud." Measures 16" x 13." Fair condition, with water staining along the bottom, a few small stains, and some tiny tears along the edging. Estimate $300-$500.
