Extremely rare, original painting by Norman Mingo used for the cover of 1963 MAD Magazine #79 featuring mascot Alfred E. Neuman with Whistler's Mother. The painting has mainly be done in pencil, watercolor and acrylic. The "MAD" lettering appears to be created with mixed media, pen and ink with watercolor shading, and attached as a paper appliqué . The published issue featuring graphics for the subtitle, "Special Mother's Day Issue." The history of MAD magazine date backs to 1952, and for many years it was the go-to publication for contemporary satire. Norman Mingo created the iconic Alfred E. Neuman, the official mascot for MAD with his first cover artwork for MAD magazine's issue #30. Mingo created 97 MAD covers in his career, as well as additional work for specials and paperbacks. Magazine publisher William M. Gaines and editor Al Feldstein originally met with Mingo when they hired him and showed him examples and postcards of a kid they wanted him to create. Feldstein told him he wanted the kid to have a "devil-may-care attitude who can maintain a sense of humor while the world is collapsing around him". Mango delivered, and the iconic Alfred E. Neuman was born. MAD Magazine ceased publication in 2019, after 67 years, with only vintage material being made available exclusively through comic book shops and by order. Very good condition. The artwork measures approximately 13 x 17 and is framed and matted to measure 27 x 33 overall. Comes with a Gotta Have Rock and Roll Certificate of Authenticity.
