An exceedingly rare 1901 Pittsburgh Pirates scorecard for a game played vs. Brooklyn Superbas at Exposition Park. Winning their very first National League pennant, the 1901 Pirates finished well ahead of their inner state rival Philadelphia Phillies. Hall of fame talent appearing on the Pirates printed line-up includes Honus Wagner and Fred Clarke while the Superbas boasted the talents of Hall of Famers Joe Kelley and Wee Willie Keeler in their line-up. The program is lightly scored in pencil. Honus Wagner who is prominently pictured in the program citing him as “the pick of the fans” in his bio, led the National League in RBIs and stolen bases. While 1901 was also the first year the American League claimed Major League status, the first World Series would not be played until 1903 in which the Pirates also participated having again won the National League pennant in 1902 and 1903. The eight-page paper program remains in remarkably good condition given its construction and age with some separation on spine and evident but minimal wear along the edges.
