The New York Yankees opened their 1923 season in a brand-new stadium, with superhero Babe Ruth clubbing a home run and forever christening the ballpark "The House That Ruth Built," a testament to the money and attendance generated by the popular star. The team would finish the season with a 98-54 record, running away with the American League by finishing 16 games ahead of the second place Detroit Tigers. The team then prepared to square off against the crosstown New York Giants in their first World Series game at their new Yankee Stadium. The game was played on Wednesday, October 10, before a crowd of more than 55,000 fans. Mule Watson of the Giants faced future Hall of Famer Waite Hoyt, and while the Yankees jumped out to an early lead by scoring three runs in the first two innings, the Giants chased Hoyt with a four-run 3rd. The Yankees managed to tie the game in the bottom of the 7th, Joe Dugan driving home Bullet Joe Bush with a triple to right field. Bush and Giants reliever Rosy Ryan (who had come on in the 3rd inning) then settled in until two outs in the top of the 9th, when Casey Stengel drove one to deep left center and raced around the bases for an inside-the-park home run. That would prove to be the deciding run, Stengel's first of many, many World Series highlights at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees would then take four of the next five games to win their first World Series title. PSA has assessed the ticket as GOOD 2, though the display quality is significantly greater. The overwhelming majority of wear comes in the form of a thin strip of paper loss on the reverse of the ticket, right at the area of the perforation, likely something that occurred back in 1923 when the ticket was torn away from its partner. Strong color and little additional wear at the edges make this an outstanding ticket, a fantastic document of the very first World Series game to be played at the legendary Yankee Stadium.
