Johnny Cash handwritten "I Went to See My Old Friend Chuck" lyrics, handwritten in black ink on yellow lined paper. Six verses to a presumably unpublished song. This song is classic example of Johnny Cash's humble and down home and easygoing sense of humor that one would expect of a country boy, but not necessarily one that had turned into a superstar. It is about a man who's love interest has apparently left him simply "out of luck," and contains many humorous and often nonsensical similes for such a state, such as: "Like a chicken that can't cluck; Like an ear of corn that you can't shuck; Like a smucker that can't smuck.”

Songs like this one demonstrate how Johnny's humble character endured throughout his life, despite where success and fame may have taken him. It is the kind of song that Johnny might have sung at one of his guitar pulls, common events where he and his closest musician friends (some professional, some amateur) simply sat together, trading songs, and enjoying the creative process. For whatever purpose this song was intended, it is a refreshingly lighthearted song that provides a whimsical break in the often somber and contemplative songbook of Johnny Cash's career. Comes with a Gotta Have Rock & Roll Certificate of Authenticity.
