Lacking exemplars we believe this to be a uniquely signed and inscribed large engraved image of British journalist and sportswriter Pierce Egan most known for his definitive sporting work on boxing, published in volumes between 1813 and 1824, titled “Boxiana: or Sketches of Ancient and Modern Pugilism,” considered by most historians to be the most authoritative sporting books written in the nineteenth century of the subject and history of boxing. The historic illustration pictures Egan seated at his desk holding his written journal and is signed and inscribed, “With Pierce Egan’s best wishes and also as a REMEMBERER of the delight he experienced in the various Representations of William, Dick, Fid Duke Dorgan, and Long Tom Coffin, by Mr. T. P. COOKE: Unrivaled Portraits of the Profs of Old England – British Sailors! Jan 1830,” written in dip pen ink. Egan refers to the remarque sketch of these named sailors made drawn in pencil in each of the four corners of the engraving. Possibly the only example extant of an Egan signature and inscription. A most notable discovery to add to the most utmost boxing collection. Lightly foxed, good condition. 13 X 18. Comes with a Gotta Have Rock & Roll Certificate of Authenticity.
