Behind the Art: Keith Haring rejected dogmas of all types. However, he felt that art was not just a visual impression but the subsequent or consequential role in which the art and its message purvey in the consumer's lives. The style Haring uses to convey such significant social issues - is often the simple cartoon style, providing iconic imagery with little to no interpretation left up for debate - following the oeuvre so essential in Haring's artistic storytelling.
Humour was an essential semiotic for the pictographic artist. His universally recognised visual language is prevalent in 20th Century Contemporary Art.
Purpose: The Pop SHOP - was an extension of Haring's creativity; however, where his subway drawings and murals may not have been able to reach all audiences, his shop was a way to make his products accessible to the masses. Located in NYC, the shop was a piece of art - decorated with murals of Haring's work and products with his iconic imagery and messages. It was vital for Haring not to keep his art within a specific circle. I.e. he wanted all people of all incomes to be able to engage and interpret his artwork tangibly. The store sold prints, t-shirts, and most famously - The “modèle déposé” (Condom Holder) of 1987 - supporting safe sex for all genders, explicitly sending a message to the AIDS-affected community. ?
Aquisition: Pamela French received two condom dispensers from her friend, Haring, upon his release of the product in 1987. This year was monumental as it was when Haring received his diagnosis and, due to his complications with AIDS - had to face the reality of the life-ending disease. The AIDS Crisis and Haring's struggle are fundamental sources of inspiration and purpose for the artist.
