This is a vexing photograph of the period’s most popular male star Clark Gable signing a large 16 X 20 photograph of Hollywood’s glamour queen Marilyn Monroe as another woman resembling Monroe sits nearby. This 10 X 10 original black and white photograph was taken by famed celebrity photographer Sam Shaw in 1954 at a Los Angeles party that was actually attended by Monroe where she met her idol Gable for the first time. It was no coincidence that they starred in a movie together years later, “The Misfits,” (1960). Shaw, who was the photographer for 1955 film “The Seven Year Itch,” starring Monroe, set up the famed image of Monroe in a white dress standing over a subway grate as a way to gain publicity for the film!
